COMMERCE / COMPANY POSITION
Can DoorDash keep its customer relationship when orders begin in ChatGPT?
Examine the position ↓In the December 2025 integration, customers used ChatGPT and DoorDash's app to prepare a grocery cart, then continued to DoorDash for checkout. The handoff retained DoorDash's checkout role.
WHAT IS CHANGING?
ChatGPT starts the task.
DoorDash completes checkout.
In the December 2025 configuration, ChatGPT can suggest recipes and DoorDash’s app turns ingredients into a shoppable list. The buyer continues to DoorDash to check out.[1]
The integration adds a route into DoorDash’s service while retaining its checkout operation.

The table shows DoorDash’s December 2025 configuration.
WHY DOES IT DIFFER?
DoorDash runs its own checkout after a handoff.
Instacart’s ChatGPT launch embedded its app, with payment through OpenAI’s Instant Checkout component and no separately documented checkout operator. DoorDash handed the buyer to its own app, where DoorDash’s checkout is documented. The difference cannot be read as one company keeping checkout and the other giving it away; the two records establish different things.
Account benefits, integration choices, payment requirements and deployment stage shape how a purchase can be completed. DoorDash’s fulfilment-coordination and performer allocations are unassigned in this grocery record.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Judge whether buyers choose DoorDash—or accept any provider.
The strategic question is whether this route helps customers choose DoorDash while preserving the capabilities and customer access that sustain its position. A handoff alone neither guarantees a strong relationship nor establishes dependence on the AI service.[2]
Track whether buyers return to DoorDash, accept a substitute suggested by the channel or use another route to its service. Those behaviours determine whether the integration builds customer preference or channel dependence.

Case evidence. Partnerships Observatory, corrected grocery comparison and dated DoorDash/Instacart reconstructions, cutoff 7 October 2026, based on the companies' December 2025 launch descriptions and subsequent held material. DoorDash's handoff checkout and Instacart's embedded launch payment are different observations; an unidentified operator is not a transferred role. Theory. Richard M. Emerson, "Power-Dependence Relations," American Sociological Review 27, no. 1 (1962), pp. 31-41, especially pp. 32-33. Dependence concerns valued outcomes and costly alternatives for the same outcome. The strategic application here is the Observatory's; the analysis examines how alternatives affect negotiating room.
